Humulin is synthesized in a non-disease-producing special laboratory strain of Escherichia coli bacteria that has been genetically altered by the addition of the gene for human insulin production. Humulin R [Regular insulin human injection, USP (rDNA origin)] is made of zinc-insulin crystals dissolved in a clear sterile solution. Made for subcutaneous injection (not intramuscularly), Humulin R is concentrated in 100 units/mL (U-100). Humulin R takes effect rapidly (in 4 to 12 hours) in comparison with other insulin, and has no extra additives that change the speed or duration of its effects.
