Omega-3 and Type 1 Diabetes
Many studies have shown that inflammation is a causative factor in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. [3] Another analysis of 18 randomized controlled studies, showed patients supplementing with fish oil/omega 3 had 25% lower triglyceride levels, 36% lower LDL-cholesterol levels, and 39.7% lower LDLtriacylglycerol levels. [4] A 16 year long study including approximately 5,000 women with type 2 diabetes, found that those with a high consumption of fish oil/omega 3 had a significantly lower incidence of coronary heart disease and a significantly lower total mortality. [5] Therefore, people that are insulin resistant or have type 2 diabetes should include consumption of omega 3's as a part of their daily regimen as a means of cardioprotection. [6] Additionally, fish oil/omega 3 supplementation prevents insulin resistance from a high fat diet in a rat model for diabetes. [7]

Daily supplementation with 2-3 grams or more of fish oil has been shown to decrease both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. [33] Analysis of 90 randomized studies concluded that supplementation with more than 2 grams of fish oil daily results in a reduction of systolic blood pressure by 2.1 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 1.6 mmHg. [34]
